Stonington, CT – When Paul Deon was contacted by Acme Wire Products by Acme Wire Products last Friday with an unsolicited donation of 2 dozen CPXR Cascade lacrosse helmets he initially thought it was one of the players initiating an April Fools joke. Upon careful follow up though, he realized that the donation was a generous gesture by a local manufacturer.

Acme Wire Products Co., Inc., a local custom fabricator of precision wire components, manufactures the wire facemasks used in Cascade helmets. Acme President, Mary Fitzgerald commented, “Acme Wire Products is proud to be the primary facemask provider to the largest lacrosse helmet manufacturer on the market and wanted to express our support of the local community through this donation.”

The lacrosse team at Stonington High receives no funding from the school and players are responsible for providing their own equipment which includes helmets, sticks, gloves, shoulderpads and armpads. Helmets are one of the most necessary, yet costliest pieces of equipment. Fitzgerald said that the value of the donation exceeded $2000.00 and the helmets will become property of the school.

Since 1998, Acme Wire Products has donated over 200 helmets and face masks to local high school lacrosse and football teams with over half of the helmets going to Stonington High. The helmets were presented to Head Coach Paul Deon by Edward J. Planeta, Jr., Acme Wire’s VP Sales in time for Stonington Bears first game of the season.

Stonington High School Lacrosse Coach Deon added, “The helmets will definitely protect and support our players. The team participated in the semifinals of both the ECC and the state tournaments in 2010 and is looking forward to an equal or better season in 2011.

Acme Wire Products also manufactures engineered wire products for a variety of other specialty applications, including hospital equipment, food processing machinery, telecommunication equipment and material handling systems and customized guarding using steel and stainless steel wire and sheet metal.

Edward J. Planeta founded Acme Wire Products in 1970. The company is now in its 2nd generation of family ownership and management and is run by the sibling team of Mary Planeta Fitzgerald, Edward Planeta Jr. and Michael Planeta. The company has occupied a 75,000 s.f. facility on Broadway Extension in Mystic, CT since 1979.
